The Encyclopaedia Britannica
In one of the most useful developments on the web so far, the famous Encyclopaedia Britannica has gone wholly on-line. After some initial difficulties with the hosting of the site, created by the (apparently unexpected) massive demand when it first went on-line, the web version of the Encyclopaedia now seems robust. The web version naturally has several advantages over its printed counterpart. It is free, it is searchable, it is intralinked and it provides some links to relevant internet material outside of itself (though at present a little limited). As a service to users of The New Testament Gateway, I have attempted to provide links to all parts of the Encyclopaedia directly relevant to the New Testament. You will find the links on the appropriate pages of The New Testament Gateway, but for convenience they are listed here too:

Biblical Literature
Extensive multi-authored article, the place to begin working through the resources relevant to Biblical Studies in the Encyclopaedia.

New Testament Canon, Text and Versions
General article including discussion of New Testament Textual Criticism. See too the article focusing on Texts and Versions of the Hebrew Bible (etc.).

Gospels & Acts
By Krister Stendahl & Emilie T. Sander: includes short discussions of the Synoptic Problem, Form Criticism and each of the Gospels & Acts.

St Paul the Apostle

The Pauline Letters
By Krister Stendahl & Emilie T. Sander; part of the larger article on Biblical Literature and the next sub-section -- by the same authors -- deals with the Pastoral Epistles, Hebrews, Revelation, etc.

The Revelation to John
By Krister Stendahl & Emilie T. Sander, as above.

Jesus Christ
The first two sections of this article (from "The Gospel Tradition" to "The Story of Jesus and faith in Jesus") are written by Günther Bornkamm.
