Free online access to SAGE Journals

Over on Xtalk James Pantou notes that there is a great offer at the moment for free online access to SAGE Journals until the end of the month. You'll have to register first:

SAGE Publications

Journals include Expository Times, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus and more. Since we don't subscribe through SAGE at Duke, and so have to wait three months for the latest issues to appear, I am pleased to be able to get access to the article by John H. Elliott that Loren Rosson has been enthusing over

I've not corrected the weird way that the Greek comes out in the email and web based contents lists.

Let me add that for non-subscribers, the currently available free for all issue is 53/1 (January 2007).

Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism

Matthew Brook O'Donnell reminded me about blogging this some time ago, and then the RSS feed from the Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism tonight spewed out a list of all articles published so far in the journal since 2000. It may be because the URL has changed, now at http://jgrchj.net, but it reminds me that I have not recently mentioned the full ten article version of Volume 3 (2006). My memory is not good enough to recall whether any of these are new, though looking back over my blog, I see that the last time I mentioned it, in October, it had just the first four articles. This is the full line-up:
------
3.1. Craig Evans, Messianic Hopes and Messianic Figures in Late Antiquity

3.2. Richard Van Egmond, The Messianic ‘Son of David’ in Matthew

3.3. Ronald Weed, Aristotle on Justice (δικαιοσύνη): Character, Action and Some Pauline Counterparts

3.4. Michael Wojciechowski, Paul and Plutarch on Boasting

3.5. Barry F. Parker, Romans 7 and the Split Between Judaism and Christiainity

3.6. Craig S. Keener, Paul's 'Friends' The Asiarchs (Acts 19.31)

3.7. Lois K. Fuller, The 'Genitive Absolute' in New Testament/Hellenistic Greek: A Proposal for Clearer Understanding

3.8. Jonathan M. Watt, Contextual Disconnection in Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities

3.9. Sean A. Adams, Luke's Preface and its Relationship to Greek Historiography: A Response to Loveday Alexander

3.10. Robert Stephen Reid, Ad Herennium Argument Strategies in 1 Corinthians
------------
I'm guessing that that closes Volume 3, and that we can expect more for 2007 soon.

Book Notes
pp. 205-208(4)
Author: Elliott, J.K.

My book review (see above) was actually written about three years ago, but it got lost in transmission. The best that I can reconstruct this situation is that NovT sent me the proofs in the summer of 2005 and I received them the day I was leaving Birmingham to come to begin a new life in North Carolina. I didn't send them back, they got lost, and I forgot about it until fairly recently when it occurred to me that I had not seen the review. I enquired and discovered that they had not published because they had not received the proofs. They looked them out and in no time at all, they have published it. So that's why this is a 2007 review of a 2001 book.

Burnett Hillman Streeter by John Court

The latest Expository Times (Volume 118, no. 1, October 2006) is announced today and it includes a most enjoyable piece on the life of B. H. Streeter:

Burnett Hillman Streeter (17th November 1874–10th September 1937)
By JOHN M. COURT
Abstract: B. H. Streeter was one of the most distinguished of his generation of English New Testament scholars who wrote the standard work on the sources of the four Gospels, in which he drew heavily on German scholarship but also introduced ideas of his own. He was an academic and a churchman, a canon of Hereford Cathedral who was also attracted to Moral Rearmament.
I'm afraid that access is only to subscribers and subscribing institutions, but if you get a chance, do give it a read. It prevents a vivid, rounded picture of the man and his achievements and has several nice little anecdotes in there too, for example:
A personal impression of Streeter, on a visit to Cambridge, is contained in this anecdote by Christopher Evans. He describes how in 1931 he was
reading an essay to Hoskyns at a supervision on a Saturday morning when there was a knock on the door and Hoskyns said ‘Just a minute, Evans. You are about to see the largest pair of feet in the Church of England. Come in Streeter.’ He had come to preach on the Sunday, a terrible sermon because he said ‘Er’ every other word. I counted fifty and then gave up.
I was also amused by the following:
In support of his interests he travelled widely, with extensive tours of China and Japan, as well as visits to India and the USA. He never went to Jerusalem; he commented: ‘I don’t think my faith’s robust enough to go there. It was hopeless in the time of Christ and it has degenerated ever since!’
The only thing that slightly spoilt my enjoyment of the article was the following comment, which I thought unnecessary:
On the internet it is this work [on the Synoptic Problem] which still receives prominent documentation, as on the Stephen C. Carlson web pages dedicated to the Synoptic Problem:
The magnus (sic.) opus of B. H. Streeter, this book is responsible for firmly establishing the 2 Source Hypothesis in the English speaking world. A must-read for its influence and rhetoric, even if its main arguments have been shown to be fallacious.
Such a sweeping and somewhat illiterate judgment would have offended Streeter greatly; a more balanced assessment of his Synoptic work can be seen below.
Stephen Carlson's comment (which is not referenced) is of course "sweeping" in that it is a sentence in part of an Annotated Bibliography, which is necessarily succinct. The notion that it is "illiterate" will strike anyone who knows Carlson's work as particularly unfair. If that characterization is to do with the "magnus" typo, then I think it is an odd overstatement, especially as the typo is not present where Streeter's magnum opus is discussed in context (Two-Source Hypothesis).

But with that odd sentence aside, it's a super article and I am most grateful to John Court for a fine appreciation of the great man.

Journals, Sage and Free PDFs

I've made lots of changes to the New Testament Gateway Journals page:

Journals

I've adjusted information for Brill journals like Biblical Interpretation and Novum Testamentum, I've fixed some URLs and changed some information and, most importantly, I've changed all the links from the old Continuum journals (all dead), to the new links at Sage Journals, which incorporate Currents in Biblical Research, Expository Times, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus, Journal for the Study of the New Testament and Journal for the Study of the Pseudepigrapha.

Now Sage have made available for most of these a free sample issue in PDF format. I've added links to all of these on the Journals page too. For convenience I'll list them here too:

Currents in Biblical Research 3.1 (October 2004)

Expository Times 116/2 (November 2004)

Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus 2.2 (June 2004)

Journal for the Study of the New Testament 26.4 (2004)

Sage Journals

Having just blogged on the Journal for the Historical Jesus, it occurs to me that I don't think I have kept up to date in this blog with these developments. For those who have not heard, Continuum / T and T Clark International sold their journals to Sage, who are experts in the journals field, last November. There is a press release about it on Sage's website here:

Press Release (PDF)

Included among the journals are several of interest to the NT scholar, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus and Expository Times among them. See also this general listing:

Theology and Biblical Studies

Sage have got the materials up pretty quickly here, though it does not look like they have yet got the electronic journal access going. Presumably in due course that access will include some backlog from T and T Clark International too.

Now this impacts on other areas back at T and T Clark International including one I am directly involved with. Clearly we can't any longer have a Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement if the Journal for the Study of the New Testament itself is located elsewhere. So we are rebranding JSNTS as Library of New Testament Studies. Similarly, the former JSOTS becomes Library of Hebrew Bible / Old Testament Studies. There will be more on this in due course; I'll put up a notice when the rebranding of the series is fully underway.

Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism

Thanks to Matthew Brook O'Donnell for alerting me to updates in the following journal:

Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism

I've added this to my Journals page. It used to be there some years ago, but got removed when the journal hit problems. Its first issue was in 2000 but then nothing appeared for some time, and the journal vanished from the web altogether, its URL poached by someone else. It returned in December 2003, now hosted at McMaster (see blog entry on). Now Volume 2 has been announced with a 2001-5 date. There are currently three articles on-line:

Zeba Crook, The Divine Benefactions of Paul the Client
Hans Förster, 7Q5 = Mark 6.52-53: A Challenge for Textual Criticism?
Malcolm Choat and Alanna Nobbs, Monotheistic Formulae of Belief in Greek Letters on Papyrus from the Second to the Fourth Century

Matt O'Donnell writes:
We are actively seeking new articles, to complete Volume 2 (which we hope to do by the summer and then to see it out in print by the end of the year), and to go into Volume 3.

The scope of the Journal is broad, covering the texts, language and cultures of the Graeco-Roman world of early Christianity and Judaism.

From editorial statement (http://divinity.mcmaster.ca/jgrchj/current):

"...the scope of this journal remains broad, with articles welcome on many areas of relevance to the journal’s aims. Nevertheless, the approach of the journal is also specific—to publish only the highest quality articles that examine the ways in which the Greco-Roman world was the world of the New Testament and early Judaism. The emphasis in the journal is thus on a range of possible approaches and bodies of material, including historical, linguistic, papyrological, epigraphical and synthetic studies of the kind that are often lacking in other journals. In fact, we encourage contributors to attempt to draw various areas of related knowledge together in their submissions."
The journal plans to keep material on-line for a year or so and then to push into print with Sheffield Phoenix Press, at the same time removing that volume from the web. So it's an interesting experiment in mixing on-line and print publication, though I think a little odd. Just as people are picking up the on-line versions of the articles and citing them, and creating some presence on the internet for their authors, they go to print only, and it's a pretty expensive print journal at £80 / $140 (institutional) or £40 / $70 (individual), and it is going to take some time for libaries to start picking up that first volume.

Relaunch of The Expository Times

Alison Jack, the executive editor of the Expository Times, has sent me this information about the relaunch of the journal. I asked if I might also make it available on the blog and she was happy to agree:

----------------------
Relaunch of The Expository Times

For over a century The Expository Times has enjoyed a reputation for its thought-provoking articles, helpful sermons and stimulating book reviews.

The Journal has large and dedicated following all over the world and many of our readers subscribe to The Expository Times throughout their working life.

With its roots in biblical scholarship, The Expository Times provides a valuable service in the continuing education of the ministry and over the years has evolved to reflect this.

In the Spring of 2005 The Expository Times will be re-launched to meet the demands of a 21st century readership. The re-launch will be accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign to thousands of ministers, colleges and seminaries worldwide.

We are therefore now inviting friends and colleagues to contribute articles to the new look Expository Times.

The ingredients which have made The Expository Times popular and successful over the years will still be very much in evidence in the new journal and The Expository Times’ principal focus will remain biblical. However, we are looking to expand the remit of the journal to cover other areas of interest to our readership. Our readers have indicated to us that they are interested in a wide range of scholarly issues covering aspects of current debate in academic circles but written in a clear and accessible way.

Expository Times’ readers are highly educated and informed and we want at all costs to maintain the academic credibility of the journal but we also need to adapt to appeal to the demands of a minister working in a busy environment. Therefore we are looking for stimulating and informative articles of
